At one time freezers were very popular for home freezing meat. Buying meat in bulk saved a considerable amount of cash and huge chest freezers were very popular. These days space seems to be more limited in modern homes, and the competition between supermarkets keeps food prices low, so the larger freezers are less popular, but smaller upright styles have become more widely used. Also the increased availability and variety of frozen foods, probably coupled with the use of microwave ovens, has led to the wide choices of more compact freezers we see today.
