Floor tiles are tougher and usually thicker than wall tiles

With a vast range of sizes, colours and finishes there is certain to be something to suit your taste.  Floor tiles range from the very traditional styles involving many intricately shaped and coloured small pieces to the really large format contemporary styles where individual tiles can be considerably larger than 1M square.

Floor tiles can be ceramic or porcelain, and also traditional quarry tiles are made from clay.  Some are a highly polished finish, others are matt and there are various stages in between.  A highly polished floor tile can of course be slippy, especially when wet, but in a bathroom setting  are feet offer a better grip.  Elsewhere in the house a polished tile can be very slippy when coming in from outside with wet shoes, or when wearing only socks or stockings.  So while the polished tile can look amazing, do be aware of the practicality and the potential for slips.

Non slip tiles are available, slip ratings are measured with an "R" number, the higher the number the more slip resistant the surface, eg. an R12 is more slip resistant than an R10.

Tiles can sometimes be described as "fully rectified", which means that the edges are flat and square at 90 degrees to the top surface, so these can be layed with a minimal gap between each tile, requiring little or no grout.  However on wet areas a grouted join is advisable to help with waterproofing.
