First there was fire, then came the oven and next the kitchen range

With a choice of fuels and a variety of configurations the range is a versatile cooker which can usually double as a means of heating household water as well.  Many ranges will have sufficient output to provide central heating and of course they all act as a great heat source for the kitchen.  So the traditional range always creates a cosy feeling and can be the heart of a country style kitchen.

Originally solid fuel would have been the heat source and mainly wood was used to fuel the range, but at times anything was burned.  A range would have been a feature in many homes, but today, because of cost, size and weight of a range, free standing and split level cookers have become the norm.  however those still wanting to include a range can choose from gas fired, oil fired or solid fuel models.

There is normally a two zone hob on top, with each zone covered by a heavy insulating lid when not in use.  Below is usually a two oven configuration, with a fast and a slow oven.  There is not normally an actual temperature control for either oven or the hob, so using a range takes a bit of getting used to, but there can be no doubt that in skilled hands the results from range cooking can be very impressive.

There are larger versions available and also some compact models and a variety of colours so the traditional range can be brought right up to date and can be combined successfully with contemporary design.

Cost of a range.

Several factors have to be considered here but expect to pay in excess of £3000 for a range cooker, and often very much more.  They are heavy brutes, are delivered in bits so require assembly and commissioning by a qualified installer, so allow for these costs too.  Then consider the practicalities of actually getting the range into your kitchen and if the floor is sturdy enough to support it.

Pros and Cons.

The biggest advantage of a range is the water heating function.  All ranges can provide domestic hot water and many can also provide enough hot water for central heating.  The range is always on so cooking is available 24/7 without the need to pre heat, and the kitchen will  be constantly warm.  In the height of summer of course it can be turned off.  The style, feel and general ambience of a range is hard to beat in a country style or more traditional setting, but I guess this is subjective, maybe I just like them.
