For the most traditional style of bathroom design,
the high level flush is a toilet design where the cistern and pan as separate items, connected together by a long flush pipe. Flushing water flows through this pipe from the cistern into the pan.

The High Level toilet uses the old chain-pull method of flushing. The principal is similar to a lever flush, its just that the lever is above the reach of many people, so it needs a chain attached so it can be pulled by those of us why are closer to the ground. Almost always a syphon flush is used, but the added cistern height provides a greater head of water and flush water enters the pan with considerable force, providing efficient flushing even with lower quantities of water. |
