Trends for 2025, wall coverings and flooring, what to expect this year.

Comfort and Warmth.

This year decor will be dominated by natural tones and textures, we anticipate a return of warmth and comfort with styles evoking that lived in feeling.  Luxurious quality materials will prevail with a focus on the warmth of timber and the appeal of nature's hues.  We expect the designers colour palette to move away from the white and greys and more towards the earthy shades, with creams, greens and autumn tones to the forefront.

Floors

rich wooden floor

Richly textured wood is likely to become popular, with a rise in the use of reclaimed timber, offering us the more sustainable option for flooring.  That aside the colour and pattern is the important aesthetic, as the ceramics and vinyl products which mimic timber will be the more practical solution for bathrooms.  In the kitchen natural timbers and engineered floors will still provide an ideal floor covering.

comfy carpet

In the bedroom and other areas around the house comfortable carpet will feature more than the harder ceramics and laminates which have been popular lately.  Patterned and textured carpets should become popular choices.

Sustainability and eco friendly solutions will still be a consideration for many consumers, and we expect to see more interest in products manufactured from more sustainable materials such as recycled stone and glass and reclaimed timber.

herringbone tiles

Little hints of past fashions and trends are helping to create cosy atmospheres playing on our nostalgic memories of childhood kitchen and bathroom floors.  Perhaps a good example of this trend a contemporary colour in a floor tile but laid in a herringbone pattern.

Walls

bold wallpaper

We should be seeing a wider use of wall paper again in the bedroom, where bold floral and fern pattern will be bringing that outdoor, natural feeling into the home.  Patterns and bold feature walls for the bathroom are likely to follow similar trends, but are more likely to be created by the use of panels to withstand the humidity, but of course there are papers specifically intended for bathroom use.

timber slats

Timber and timber effect wall panels are also gaining in popularity and the "slat wall" style makes for a great feature offering a bit of contemporary style but bringing a big hit of natural warmth and that traditional comforting vibe.  There are waterproof versions now available which can be used in any bathroom area.  These panels can be used to great effect as a simple vertical feature stripe or as a whole wall feature.

The choice of wall coverings for the bathroom is a wide one.  Ceramic and porcelain tiles will probably always be a popular choice, but there is a rise in the variety and type of panel systems becoming available.  We have mentioned the timber slat style already, but there are also many acrylic, pvc and laminate varieties available.  Colours are starting to move away from the ubiquitous grey which has prevailed during the last decade, and there is a shift towards more cream and buttermilk shades and of course a revival of patterns.  Expect to see less of the uniformity of the same finish around the whole room, and a revival of contrasting colours and differing textures.  Painted walls are back, mixed with a tile or panel surface, particularly in wet areas.  Cosy and comfortable is back.

splashback

Kitchen walls , in particular areas behind worktops, have been moving away from pure tiling and the splashback in glass, laminate or acrylic has become very fashionable.  Practical too as minimal joint and grout free surface is ideal for easy maintenance in cooking areas.  The upstand is also on the rise, where a strip of material, usually matching the worksurface, is fitted.  At typically up to about 150mm high, this presents a great look and also offers a practical backstop to your working surface.  It can be tiled or painted above, the trend seems to be towards the former.
