A tough finish without joints

Microcement is ideal for walls and floors.

Applied to almost any surface the microcement layer is typically only a few millimeters thick and offers a stylish and practical choice for bathroom or kitchen walls and floors.  Also known as micro-topping or micro-concrete, it is a trendy decorative coating composed of cement and polymers.  Its popularity has been steadily rising, with microcement kitchens and bathrooms frequently showcased on social media and in magazines.

The finish is often mistaken for polished concrete, I guess it basically is a thin concrete layer although the addition of the polymers strengthen the surface and when a sealer is applied the microcement provides a waterproof and bacteria resistant finish.

Very versatile

Microcement's remarkable versatility and high resistance make it an excellent choice for so many projects, particularly when considering its application on various surfaces. It can be applied to floors,  walls and even countertops.  Microcement offers a smooth texture and a contemporary finish that rivals many traditional materials.  Its waterproof properties also make it suitable for wet areas such as showers, bathrooms, or kitchens. Moreover, its resistance to temperature changes and weather conditions makes it a perfect option for both interior and exterior surfaces.

Application

The first stage involves the surface being primed over a fiberglass mesh which offers stability.  The base microcement coat comes next than a further primer and a final top microcement coat.  Finally the whole surface is sealed with a high grade sealant.  When fully cured the result is a seamless finish which will provide a strong wear resistant and easy to maintain surface for walls or floor.

The base for application of course needs to be flat but can be of almost any material.

Waterproof

When properly sealed the microcement surface if waterproof and also bug and bacteria resistant so it provides a great finish for any wet area like the shower or bath surround, as well as food preparation surfaces

Colour options

Microcement is available in range of colours so you can get creative with pastel shades in addition to the base off-whites and greys.

Pros & Cons

Lets start with the bad news, so due to the layered application process and time to cure, microcement is not a quick option, and the process is a bit messy, but then plastering and tiling have a degree of mess to contend with too.

On the up side the practicality and aesthetic of the finished surface well makes up for the application time.  If you yearn for a simple seamless look with excellent durability and ease of cleaning, plus waterproof and hygienic properties then microcement will be a great choice.  Microcement can of course be used alongside other materials, so the scope for design and expression is endless.
